about

Weird situations happen in relationships sometimes. This song was written about a party I went to with a significant other, and she ran into an old (almost) boyfriend there and wound up talking with him privately about loose ends and why things fizzled out between them. I was somewhat aware of this, but wasn't worried about it and nothing happened between them. I saw it as a "closure" type thing and good for them to do. Later on at home, I was walking down the hall toward the bedroom and noticed that the door was closed and I could hear her talking to someone. It was her best friend/girlfriend, and they were talking about the encounter from the party and my non-reaction to it. I quietly stood outside the door and listened for awhile and then walked away. I was surprised at her comments about it--like she wanted me to get angry about it and was somehow disappointed that I didn't. On some level I understand this, but I believe in trust. Gotta have trust in a relationship, and when it's tested you have to see how it plays out. Though I've been burned by this philosophy once, it has only been once and the rest have been on the level. I just think it's healthier that way. I must admit taking poetic license on this song; we didn't break up right away as the last verse implies, (although we eventually did anyway) I just thought the song worked better like this (while keeping what was said in the phone conversation hidden) as a universal concept and description of how some situations like this CAN turn out.

lyrics

FLIRTING WITH A HEADACHE
AND THE PILLS ARE IN YOUR PURSE
AND YOU ARE LOCKED IN YOUR ROOM

YOU'RE TALKING TO YOUR GIRLFRIEND
AND I KNOW IT'S ABOUT ME
BECAUSE I'M OUTSIDE IN THE HALL

I DON'T MIND THE SECRETS
IT'S THE SURPRISE THAT HURTS
BUT I'LL KEEP IT ALL TO MYSELF

I'M PACKING UP A FEW THINGS
AND I'M LOOKING TO THE SUN
WHILE YOUR MASCARA RUNS
